Egypt Celebrates "International Human Rights Day" by Illuminating the Pyramids and the Buildings of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Justice
In celebration of the International Human Rights Day on December 10, Egypt illuminated the Pyramids of Giza on Thursday evening, the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Heliopolis Courts Complex and the Abdeen Court. This reflects Egypt's pride of the international day and the country's historical role in supporting the global human rights movement and the strengthening of the international regime that protects these rights.
The Illumination of the Pyramids of Giza, which represents a symbol of the historical Egyptian civilization, is an indication of Egypt's continuous providence in various fields, including the early establishment of a culture of human rights and the upholding of the values of stability, solidarity and pride in the national identity.
The illumination of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ headquarters in Cairo came as an affirmation to Egypt's role in supporting and strengthening the global human rights regime and its permanent commitment to its international obligations in this field. While the illumination of the Heliopolis Court Complex and the Abdeen Court embodied Egypt's adherence to the values of justice, equality and the rule of law, as solid foundations to ensure the protection of human rights.
The celebration of the International Human Rights Day coincides with Egyptian efforts to prepare the first national strategy for human rights, after the establishment of the Supreme Standing Committee for Human Rights, which began its work early this year as a national mechanism to manage this file.
The Committee, headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, consists of 12 ministries and national bodies concerned with human rights. The Committee is concerned with preparing a national strategy for human rights, proposing legislative measures related to the promotion of human rights, preparing national reports submitted to international and regional human rights mechanisms and following up the implementation of the recommendations issued by those mechanisms. The Committee’s role also includes preparing official responses to the correspondence received from international and regional human rights mechanisms, and developing an action plan for building national capacities in the field of human rights.
The Supreme Committee carries out these specializations in cooperation and coordination with the units and departments concerned with human rights that have been established in all relevant ministries, governorates and national bodies.
